Place: Abista (at a Japanese room)
As one of culture classes for foreigners living in Abiko city, AIRA held a class for challengers to put on yukatas.
Ms. Tokue Suzuki and two others kindly instructed all about wearing kimonos. The class was attended by eleven students, namely, from Brazil, China, Korea and Sri Lanka. Almost all of them tried kimonos for the first time. Some students tried to wear their own kimonos, but those who didn't have their own dressed others' kimonos. One student said she had repeatedly clothed kimono in her own way ever since she had bought it last year.
Every student was absorbed in wearing kimonos neatly struggling with putting on and out kimonos, for a better kimono dresser till they could say confidently, "Now I can do it by myself!"
Detailed explanation and demonstration by teachers were given on adjusting underclothes, collar and length of kimono, and on tying laces and an Obi.
Each student, watching teachers' demonstration, went on acquiring knack of numerous items needed for standard kimono dressing, and became more cheerful and enjoyable. When fixed well the Bunko Musubi, one of Obi's knot forms, a student of Japanese language class elegantly posed, saying "Irasshaimase!", the greeting of welcoming customers at a restaurant or like. Kimono dressing involves many unfamiliar words. Students closely could understand them through teachers' explanations, however, without due explanations, it would be difficult to have an exact understanding of it.
A short kimono course gave many hints to all students for sure.
The next culture class is scheduled in July with the subject "Shuuji", Japanese calligraphy. So, why don't you join at the next class with your friend?
