2001年に始まったJBFは今年第８回目を迎えました。各種イベントが手賀沼周辺の施設で繰り広げられ、あいにくの低温曇天の天候にもかかわらず大勢の来場者がありました。

AIRAのブースにはアホウドリおよび小笠原諸島への移住作戦、世界の国鳥を説明したパネルを展示しました。アホウドリの生態、移住作戦に関するクイズを設け、参加いただいた方には賞品をお渡ししました。設問は展示しているパネルを読めば容易に回答できるものです。クイズの中にはアホウドリの生活のしかたについての出題がありましたが、正解の「一夫一婦制」という言葉の意味が解らない若い方もいました。

アホウドリを刻印した紅白まんじゅうはデザインが可愛いと言ってくださる方や収益金が移住作戦の一部に供されることを知りお買い上げくださる方もいました。悪天候のため売れ行きが心配でしたが完売することができました。

海外からのJBFへの参加団体も中華民国桃園県野鳥学会（Wild Bird Society of Taoyuan, Taiwan）に加えて韓国全羅北道丁（JEOLABUK-DO）も初参加。韓国の団体にはAIRAブースを一部をお貸しして国際交流の輪を拡げました。

11月8日夕 全国から参加した出展団体に対するレセプションが開催され山岸実行委員長、渡辺副市長他の方々の歓迎の挨拶がありました。山階鳥類研究所　島津理事長からは「2008年の鳥の話題で特筆すべきものとしては、アホウドリの移住作戦、佐渡でのトキの試験放鳥がありました」とご挨拶がありました。

This JBF is the 9th since its inauguration in 2001. This year JBF occupied Water Park as its main site though until last year Water Park and Teganuma Park were utilized.
Favored by good weather, every spot of the site was crowded with visitors from all over Japan and some foreign countries, many carrying binoculars for bird watching.

The AIRA volunteers invited people for testing their knowledge on bird with quizzes, of which answers could be found in the panels showing various birds including albatross. Kids and accompanying adults enjoyed comparing notes, with shs and ohs.
AIRA's specially made Manjus (steamed sweet bun) marked with albatross figure for promotion of the breeding site relacation project, were all sold out sooner than expected on both days, despite the manjus were somewhat expensive compared with the sweets or wares sold at neighboring booths. The profit from the manju sale is to be donated to the Yamashina Institute for Ornithology.

On the evening of Sunday, 7th., a reception was held for the participating groups from various regions of the nation and some from overseas. Mr. Satoshi Yamagishi, Director General of the Institute and Chairman of the JBF Implementation Committee noted in his speech that ornithology alone is not enough for full understanding of bird and that's why people flock to this festival in order to look at bird, treating it as a part of culture, from divers view points such as painting, music, sculpture and literature. He also emphasized that JBF is unique domestically and internationally, encompassing natural science and various arts.
