Date/Time: Wednesday, April 16, 2011 12:00 noon to 3.00 p.m.
Venue: Study room no.1, Abista
Instructress: Ms. Shunko Iwai
Student: 6 people
Kind of flower: Japanese cornel (cornus fruit), stock, statice
Tool: Container filled with water and kenzan (needle-point holder)
Celebrating the gaiety of entering kindergartens and schools in the spring time, Ms. Iwai focused on arranging seasonal flowers in line with the Sogetsu school.
The essence of arranging flowers depends on the composition of the whole view,
namely the three elements, center, associate and subordinate positions.
Firstly, in the center a twig of cornel was held onto the kenzan.
She advised them to trim by scissors extra straight twigs so that the central twig wouldn’t look like utterly vertical but like winding slightly and giving soft impression.
Secondly, the associate part was added with cornels also, with its height at three third of the center’s. If you use a thick twig for the center, the associate part should be made by thinner twigs to keep a balance, or vice versa.
The twigs of the center and associate should not necessarily be facing frontal side, but be slightly curved to the right or left, giving a feeling of glamour.
For the subordinate position, they planted pink stocks at the height three third
of the associate part and put white statices around the stocks as an anchoring element
considering the total balance.
“ The three points, center, associate and subordinate should be securely positioned
then subsequent modifications such as angle and bend are all up to the students.
Arranging flower is so amazing because each person’s character and sensibility are all
different just like no flowers are the same.”, Ms. Iwai commented.
There are some hints advised by her.
Fill the water in the container up to the top of the kenzan. It is a key to set the kenzan not in the center, but at the left forward to give a wider view of the water surface. You may also find freshness by making use of atmospheric factor in arranging.
Students’ works, after being slightly modified by the teacher, suddenly turned to a vivid finishing. All students could complete respective work thanks to the teacher’s instruction with politeness and humor.
