Prof. Kitamura Coaches Follow-up Study

thumb_100323-4Prof.KitamuraDate/Time: Tuesday, March 23, 2010 10:30a.m. to 12:00noon
Venue: Hall/Abiko Civic Plaza
Lecturer: Professor H. Kitamura/Seitoku University
Managed by: AIRA Japanese Language Class Session
Attendant: Approx. 90 people
Theme: Teaching performance-Failure case and model demonstration

Marking the third of the follow-up study series, the final class was held for those who had completed the Japanese teaching course by Prof. Kitamura.

On the stage the professor and four "temporary foreigners" demonstrated conversation on several occasions, which would give hints for better understanding for volunteer teachers in their actual teaching.

People not only from the city but many from the neighboring areas eagerly observed the skit performed by the four volunteer students and the professor.

They demonstrated an interactive communication using the following conversation model.

A word's root "--tei---"of "Kare wa ima denwa o kakete imasu.", which shows an aspect in a conversation and used to mean an action's completion, incompletion, continuation, result, start, or tarmination of action.

This expression is always accompanied by a word implying tense.

Followings are improper examples commonly observed in actual teaching:

1. Lengthy explanation: Voluntary teachers, particularly men, tend to explain too much to foreign learners. Resultantly teachers study themselves, meanwhile students simply answer in "Yes", or "No" word.

Using puppets would be effective in conversation to avoid a monotone. What's essential at this occasion is to work the doll of the speaking part and not of the listening part at all, otherwise the student would be confused.

2. Nominating students in turn: While you are talking with a student on a subject, you should nominate other students also from time to time to avoid their indifference to the ongoing conversation. Nominating at random should also be considered.

Rhysm and fluency in a conversation are essential in a language class.

To explain matters with movement is another effective way. For example, while you explain about an action "I'm now calling", you would better actually add calling movement with your hand. You make them understood through the actual movement about what he/she is practicing for what purpose.

The word pattern "shite imasu" is used not only for an action in progress but also for a reason or declining connotation.

A sentence, "He is calling now." imply that he is unable to come thereforeof.

When you learn a language, just like bicyle riding and swimming practice, you have to learn it by your body.

Professor Kitamura led the class all the time lively with moderate speed, and entertained audience through the well-programmed demonstratinal actions using a pair of puppets and a skit with students on the stage.
