Place:Abiko Civic Plaza(Japanese-style room)
Instructress:Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Treadway- Adachi
This was the first trial program by AIRA called ,"Let's play in English" planned for 2 to 5 years old kids. The instructress Mrs. Adachi is from the USA and brought her 14 months old son in the class as well. Seven families including eight kids participated.
First of all, she introduced an English song "Hello" with working a glove puppet.
The teacher asked all kids in order saying ' What's your name?' It was a surprise that there was a child who clearly answered in English as "My name is so-and-so".
Secondly, they played number-game, counting the number from 1 to 5 in English and from 5 to 1 in reverse. The practice went on from 6 to 10 and counted down from 10 to 6 in the same manner. Then, showing the picture of a bus, the teacher tried to let kids learn English words like, driver, people, wheel, wiper and horn.
Other plays were, to move the body saying, "In summer we do the breast stroke, side stroke and diving at the swimming pool", and to trace the body downward while pointing head, face, shoulder, knee and toes.
Every child looked so happy because each movement was performed in singing and added postures to a rhythmical music.
Though there was a family where the mother enjoyed the class and the kid was lying down on the floor......
They also enjoyed find-a-card game. There had been scattered previously here and there in the room cards with English words in alphabet (like A as in Apple), similar to 'I,RO,HA' of Japanese, and kids were asked to pick up the card that the teacher had read out. In the end, they all sang together the well-known song, the song of ABC and closed the delightful class of the day.
For your information, there are some vacancies for "the 3rd AIRA Kids Day", scheduled on July 29(Friday) 15:15?16:00 at Abiko Civic Plaza(Japanese-style room).
